16. PE-backed IPOs: Sharp increase in activity following meagre years
2020 was a strong year for private equity-backed IPOs, with 24 listings in total. Among them, 7 listings were on the main markets.
“IPO activity was solid in 2020, led by record-low interest rates, available liquidity and a domino effect of companies observing peers that listed successfully. The anticipation that valuation is more attractive on public marketplaces, may also have played a role. The result is a growth in the number of companies filing for IPOs and a net growth in the number of public companies,” says Joachim Høegh-Krohn, CEO at Argentum.
Twenty-four private equity sponsored IPOs were completed in 2020, This was on the same level as 2014, but lower than in the years between 2015 and 2017. But it was high compared to 2019 (5) and 2018 (13). See graph below.
“The trend is especially strong on marketplaces where the criteria for listing are low, like Euronext Growth and Nasdaq OMX First North. The mix of novice investors entering the market, the need for liquidity to finance growth, and existing owners wanting to realise their investment at attractive pricing, has led to an increase in IPOs,” Høegh-Krohn adds.
Nasdaq First North, based in Stockholm, had nine PE-backed IPOs of Nordic companies. Norway-based Euronext Growth experienced a boom in IPO activity with the listing of eight Norwegian PE-backed companies. See complete list below.
Largest listings during the year
On the main lists, we find two of the largest PE-backed IPOs in 2020:
- The largest PE-backed listing was the Sweden-based investment platform Nordnet, backed by Nordic Capital and valued at €2.5 bn. The company’s objective is to “democratise savings and investments for private savers.”
- Abry Partners-backed Link Mobility, a Norway-based mobile messaging and communication platform as a service, that was valued at €631 million.
The rest of the largest listings are on the smaller marketplaces:
- The Norwegian biotech company Vaccibody was listed on Euronext Growth and valued to €1.6 bn upon listing. The company develops vaccines for clinical use in cancer treatment. In addition, it is also in the preclinical stage of developing a second-generation covid-19 vaccine.
- Stockholm-based Calliditas Therapeutics, backed by Investinor and Industrifonden, was listed on Nasdaq Global Select Market at a €398 million valuation. Calliditas is a leading specialty pharmaceutical company in the kidney disease area.
- HusCompagniet was the largest of four Danish companies with PE-ownership that got listed in 2020, valued at €314 million. HusCompagniet is a market leader in the single-family brick-house market in Denmark and Sweden.
- Only one Finnish company is on the list: EQT-backed Musti Ja Mirri, a leading pet specialty retailer in the Nordic region, was listed on Nasdaq OMX Helsinki at a €293 million valuation.
