2. Round-up of Nordic private equity in 2023
In 2023, the Nordic private equity (PE) market witnessed a shift in investment dynamics. A total of €12.2 billion was invested across 405 companies.
€1.5 billion was invested across 297 companies in the venture segment, and €10.7 billion was invested across 108 companies in the buyout segment. In the venture segment, the ICT sector still attracted the largest share of investments but experienced a decline in number of investments. Conversely, the industrials sector surged, recording a record 60 deals, a 33 percent increase from 2022. In the buyout segment, the health care & life sciences sector dragged down the total number of investments the most.

Fundraising
Fundraising activity mirrored the investment trend, with venture and growth funds raising €1.7 billion, In total, buyout funds secured €7.2 billion, marking a 75 percent reduction from 2022 and significantly falling short of the expectations set prior to the year. That being said, the fundraising climate in the Nordics are often cyclical, as can be seen in the graph below.

PE-backed IPO
The number of exits fell in 2023, with a 21 percent decrease from 2022 and a 41 percent drop compared to the five-year average. This downturn was most pronounced in the venture segment, where exits dropped by 45 percent. Furthermore, exits dropped the most in Denmark, and within the ICT segment.
